Inviting Guest Bedrooms
Many of you are sprucing up your guest bedrooms in anticipation of out of town family and friends staying with you for the holidays. Is your guest bedroom ready? Even though it is fun to visit loved ones you haven't seen a while, it also comes with a level of anxiety because it isn't home.
With a little thoughtful planning and imagination, you can create a warm and inviting atmosphere for your guests. Here are our 10 tips for the perfect guest bedroom.
Keep the Guest Bedroom Decor Simple and Tasteful
A busy guest bedroom can make a guest feel uncomfortable and out of place. If your own style is colorful and full of patterns, try selecting one main color and pattern that reflects your point of view and mix it with softer neutrals. That way, it still reflects your style with a restful atmosphere for your guests to feel at home.
Keep the Bedroom and Bedding Clean
Make sure sheets are crisp and stain-free, with multiple pillows (some people like to sleep with more than one pillow). Check to be sure your pillows are plump and supportive and the mattress is comfortable.
I know this sounds basic because it is. Nothing says you aren't welcome or planned for than a messy room and dirty sheets. This may seem like common sense, but you would be surprised how many times a quick pick up or a room misses a mess your kids or pets may have left in the corner or under the bed.
Extra Blankets and a Fan on Hand
Some people are hot-natured, so a floor fan tucked in the closet can help to cool off the room at night. It can also provide some white noise for guests you can't sleep when it's too quiet.
And some people are cold-natured, like me. Provide some extra blankets that they can layer up with to stay warm. One of the best experiences is wrapping yourself up in a soft blanket.
Fresh Towels
Make sure to stock up on fresh, neutral towels neatly folded where guests can find them. Nothing says welcome like soft, fluffy towels waiting after a nice warm shower. And make sure you have plenty of washcloths and hand towels.
Provide a Space in Closets or Dressers in Your Guest Bedroom
No one likes to live out of a suitcase, where your things get tumbled into a wrinkled mess. Make sure your clear out room in your closet and dressers from them to unpack their things.
Include a Desk or Comfy Chair
Many of us still travel with work to do, so try to provide a quiet temporary workspace. It can be difficult to find a place that isn't full of distractions when you are visiting another person's home, so having a place to go to focus on important matters is appreciated.
Find Out Their Favorite Snacks
Have you ever gotten the munchies after everyone else has gone to bed? I know I have, but I didn't feel comfortable sneaking out of my bedroom to scrounge around someone else's kitchen looking for something to eat. Ask ahead of time what some of their favorite snacks are and leave them in the room.
WIFI Password
It can be annoying to repeat a lengthy password, and no one likes to have their host repeatedly for it. You can write down the wifi password on a card and leave it on the nightstand or tape it to the back of the door. That way, it is handy for them when they need it.
Universal Charger and Power Adaptor
Having a universal phone charger waiting in the room will be a pleasant and welcome surprise. Our lives are practically run on electronics now, and you never know when your guests may forget theirs at home. When they discover they don't have to run out and buy a new one it will be a wonderful surprise!
A Basket of Toiletries
Raise your hand if you get where you are going and inevitably discover you have left something at home. It happens to me more often than I care to admit. You can purchase some of the common items like toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, mouthwash, face and body lotion, razors, band-aids, makeup remover, cotton balls, and q-tips, etc and anything else you think may be forgotten at home. Place them in a basket where they will easily be seen, like on a chair or the counter of the guest bathroom. And don't forget to check it once the visit over so you can replenish it for the next guest.
Hopefully, these tips have helped to relieve your own stress of making sure your guests feel welcome and right at home. And if you have any tips of your own, please let us know!
